A week of Widespread Panic: Rock

Widespread Panic:
Rock

"But I can't go back - the dog won't go back
He won't run the path to his master's home
"Til he climbs that bank over yonder"

A week of Widespread Panic: Chilly Water

Widespread Panic:
Chilly Water

"Well, my horse's eyes are glassy
He breathed the city in his lungs last night
   I lead his natural body
To the trough to regain his might"

A week of Widespread Panic: Driving Song

In anticipation of Widespread Panic coming to NYC (ok, Brooklyn) this September, I am going to devote this week's blog postings to photos that correspond to Widespread Panic lyrics. Some photos might be loose interpretations while others more obvious and direct.

For this first one, I am going to show you a picture of a coffee cup and then follow it up with a coffee lyric. Pretty simple, right? I mean, it's Monday after all.

Widespread Panic:
Driving Song

"A cup of warm coffee, some vitamin C
a bowl for the cat, a bowl for the dog, a bowl for me."

A week of NYC bike lane obstructions (day 5)

It all comes down to the last photo of the week. Of course, I was caught with my pants down (aka no "real" camera) when I spotted this gem. So, I grabbed the trusty iPhone and shot away. This was captured on the east side of Union Square. I'm not sure why they had parked the huge police truck on the sidewalk. I believe they do video surveillance out of those things...not really sure though.

You can't tell from this photo, but there are 2 important things to point out. First, there is no driver in the car parked in the bike lane. It was simply parked there, and for how long I have no idea. Second, there were 2 or 3 other police cars just behind me that had pulled up onto the extra large sidewalk. Why this one was parked in the bike lane is unclear.

This photo was actually a twofer. Note the rider to the right of the police car. Not only has he been pushed out of the bike lane and into traffic, but he is going against traffic and would commonly be called a "salmon" in NYC.

So, you have a cop car in the bike lane and someone salmoning...what a way to end this little project.

A week of NYC bike lane obstructions (day 3)

Here is a good example of "bike lane improv". See, just 1 block prior to this one, there was a nice, green bike path (in the distance you can see where the lane picks up again). Then, they ran out of room, so they just crammed the bike lane and the traffic lane together. Don't get me wrong...I'm grateful for the bike lanes. This is just another example of the bike lane hazards that are everywhere. You can see how it pushed one cyclist to the right of the traffic.

A week of NYC bike lane obstructions (day 2)

Bike lane obstructions come in all shapes and sizes. I found this aluminum can collector on Bleecker Street in the West Village.

A week of NYC bike lane obstructions

Ok, so I was totally inspired by a VIDEO that a friend recently shared with me. Basically, an NYC cyclist was ticketed for NOT riding in the bike lane. He then made a short video about his experience. The best part of the video are the accidents that he has due to the bike lane obstructions. If you are ADD, then skip to 1:15 for the good stuff.

I'm making Bike Lane Obstructions my project for the week. This is day 1. It literally took my all of 1 block to find this one.

Check back each day this week for fresh bike lane madness.
